About Time I Told You Some News
Hello, my friends,
I’m going to keep this one short and sweet. I have been waiting a very, very long time to tell you this news, and while I’m sure it will be all over social media quickly, I wanted to tell you first and personally.
People We Meet on Vacation is (very likely) going to be a movie!
I say “very likely” because films are made up of a million moving parts, and there’s a saying among authors to not get your hopes up for an adaptation to pan out until you’re actually sitting at the premier. The truth is, as an author it’s fairly common to have film deals you never even end up announcing before they fall apart. Or, in some glorious cases such as this one, films that are secretly in the works for years, and you get to shout about only once a good percentage of those moving parts have already clicked into place.
We have our director, Brett Haley. I love him. We have our screenwriter, Yulin Kuang. I love her. We have our script. And I love it so much that when I finished reading and set it aside, I just started weeping. I felt seen in the exact way that Alex’s story made Poppy feel seen. It’s like Yulin reached into my heart and brain and pulled these characters outside of my body. She knows them better than I do at this point, I think. She wrote new jokes that felt so perfectly attuned to them. She and Brett both understand the heart of this book, and care deeply about making a film version of it that brings out the very best of the book.
They’re devoted to getting it right, and they’re going to.
There will be loads more to share soon. Thank you for being on this wild ride with Alex, Poppy, and me. I’m so excited to see where we all get to go next.
With so much excitement that I sort of feel like I might pass out and sleep for the next nine hours,
Emily
P.S. As for groceries, I’m trying this out tonight. Will let you know how it goes.
